Hotel du Vin, Glasgow West End

A recent dining-out experience that I’d love to share was our dinner at Hotel du Vin. It was a Sicilian Wine dinner of 4 courses plus matching Sicilian wines (as well as canapés).

The night started (unexpectedly) out in the gardens – it was the height of summer and actually properly warm in Glasgow for once. It was really lovely be able to sip, mingle and enjoy the lovely weather outside (although I did get chased by a wasp) while nibbling on olives and almonds.

We moved into the main dining room for the meal and were seated at three large tables of around 10 people. We had been seated by the window which was perfect as it was a little warm inside during the heat. All the meals were accompanied by a matching MandraRossa wine from their estate in Sicily, and before each wine we got a bit of a description of the grapes and some tasting suggestions.

The first course was the antipasti – Italian marinated vegetables and cured meats. Just look at it – surely one of the most beautiful plates of food, ever? And it tasted just as good as it looked!

Next up was a lovely palate cleanser of a Lemoncello sorbet with some orange zest through it as well. This was perfect for the warmer weather!

Then it was time for the main – summer truffle tagliatelle with wild mushroom foam. Sounds simple (and even looks simple) but this was absolute heaven to eat. The pasta was freshly made and tasted like soft ribbons and the mushroom was rich and decadent with the truffle. I could have happily eaten at least another plate of this, if not more.

Then it was time to move onto the cheese course. We were presented with a selection of Italian cheese and they were all really lovely and I loved the addition of the quince paste.

The final course was dessert. Sadly my photo of this didn’t turn out at all as by this time it was a little dark in the dining room. It was a traditional Cassatta Siciliana with Summer Mandarin sorbet. Delicious and a lovely finish to the meal.

Thank you to Hotel du Vin for inviting us to sample this lovely wine tasting dinner. You can check out what upcoming dining events they have on their website.
